Home Delivered Meals To Seniors Provides Mental Benefits
Several recent research studies are proving out the value of meal and grocery delivery services as an important service for older patients coming out of hospitals - both as a way to limit readmission and improve mental health.
An AARP funded Meals on Wheels study fu found that seniors who lived at home alone but got meals delivered showed statistically significant reductions in feelings of isolation. Daily meal delivery was shown to be more effective rather than weekly. Seniors also experienced fewer falls and hospitalization.
Sheila Patrice, 87 of Connecticut, says her weekly delivered meals is a large improvement in her life. “Most of my family lives out of state so having food delivered makes me feel safe and secure and I really appreciate it,” she told BHH. Sheila receives meals through Meals on Wheels and qualifies due to being homebound and isolated. She attributes the service to helping her overall mental health. “I find that it gives me something to look forward to.”
Several home care companies are adding meal services. Homewatch CareGivers, a home care company that serves 33 states, recently announced a partnership with The Helper Bees, which recently acquired healthAlign and offers meal delivery services through Medicare Advantage.
